Centiped - Scolopendra polymorpha Patagonia Creek Preserve, St Cruz County, Arizona, USA October 18, 2008 Size: 4-5in
We saw several on sandy paths. This one was digging a hole: mostly scratching like a dog, then moving the debris by moving its front end. Pea-sized rocks were handed backwards under the body from leg pair to leg pair, bucket-brigade-style.

Never seen a silver centipede before. I can't find anything similar in the BugGuide, but it most closely resembles the "tropical centipedes" (though I don't think they live around here).

Large Centipede- Yellowish -Scolopendra polymorpha? - Scolopendra polymorpha Skull Valley, AZ, USA (WSW of Prescott 10 miles), Yavapai County, Arizona, USA November 8, 2006
This poor fellow was accidentally injured with the shovel during excavation of Nutgrass from the rose garden. Doubt he will make it...but, I don't know....some wild critters survive better than we'd often think.
Compare to Scolopendra polymorpha.

Thanks Steve
It sure looks right to me. "Data" shows it for CA & it's logical that we might have them here also. Colors & structure looks the same.

centipede - Scolopendra polymorpha Norco, Riverside County, California, USA Size: 7"
I found this in my mother's house just wandering around. Any ideas of what kind of centipede this is? It is about 7" long, with 20 pairs of legs and moves REALLY fast. It likes to eat mealworms and junebugs.
