Epinotia signiferana - Epinotia columbia

Epinotia signiferana - Epinotia columbia
In Westwood by outdoor night light; elevation 5100ft, Lassen County, California, USA
September 4, 2012
Size: Forewing length 7mm
ID Update:
Correction to species Epinotia columbia was provided by Steve Nanz. Please see comments below. Apparently errors in original specimen identification at BOLD Systems resulted in a misidentification via DNA of this moth.

[Prior Identification: provided by BOLD Systems was Epinotia signiferana.]

See here for BOLD's Public Data Portal - BIN Page for this specimen.
And here for this specimen's DNA Record Page at BOLD Systems.

Moved
Moved from Epinotia signiferana.

This is either columbia or a species close to columbia as are the rest of the specimens in that BIN.

Columbia was described with two varieties and later sunk with the European species crenana and subsequently elevated back to full species. It would appear that BIN AAE1756 is crenana from Europe. It’s nearest neighbor in the tree is BIN BIN AAE1754 with specimens identified as columbia and crenana ranging from northwest Yukon to southern Quebec. BIN AAF0407, your BIN, specimens range from northern British Columbia to southern California. These three BINs appear to form a single branch in the tree. I tried to follow the original description of columbia and the two varieties. Specimens in AAE1754 and AAF0407 share many of the characteristics described but there is so much variation that it is unclear if either BIN refers to a particular subspecies. It does seem, though, that the two BINs together are Kearfott’s columbia.

I reviewed columbia, signiferana and kasloana with Richard Brown and Michael Sabourin. The species pages for signiferana and kasloana were full of errors but have now been corrected. You will see that signiferana is very distinctive and very different from the other two species. Columbia is extremely variable so I made no changes to that page. I suspect that there may be no errors.

Thank you Steve!
I am impressed by your excellent efforts in getting these moths to their correct species pages!

3324.1 – Epinotia columbia?
I think that's the BIN for columbia and the BIN for signiferana is AAE1192. Need to do more research so stay tuned.

Hmmm...
When I originally ran the sequence, this moth was a 'solid' match with 20+ specimens of Epinotia signiferana. Back then there were no E. columbia specimens. Now there are at least three with barcodes. Currently the top 30 matches are still E. signiferana, the first E. columbia matched at 99.12%. These two species may be Synonyms.

The individual published record pages here that I look at, for Epinotia signiferana were linked to the AAF0407 Bin page rather than the AAE1192. BIN page.

The individual published record pages here for BIN AAE1192 list only Epinotia kasloana specimens.

I think to some degree the placement of data at 'boldsystems.org' (individual published record location) is sometimes out of sync with the placement of data at 'barcodinglife.com' (BIN page location). Also every image that I view in the BIN pages shows the exact same ID number and species name for all imagess at AAF0407. Same problem at AAE1192!

v4 stinks
I only use v3. The default is v4. As you can see, going to an image does not refresh the caption. I replace the www with v3 in the url to get the v3 interface.

I think that E. signiferana and columbia are distinct species. I believe that the true BIN for signiferana is AAE1192. It has 12 specimens of which 6 are incorrectly identified as kasloana and three are correctly identified as signiferana of which 2 have genitalia images. The wing pattern of specimens in this BIN match the original description of signiferana. The true BIN for columbia I think is AAF0407 and the BIN for kasloana is AAI5369. If I am correct, signiferana and columbia are not that close to each other. I emailed an expert. This should be easy to sort out since BOLD has the genitalia images for BIN AAE1192. I would check it myself but I don't have access to the some of the literature.
