immature springtail - Orchesella cincta

immature springtail - Orchesella cincta
Dummer, Coos County, New Hampshire, USA
March 27, 2007
Size: 1.8mm
Found in leaf litter.

No problem Frans
It only takes a couple of clicks, and it's where it belongs. These immatures are especially difficult because they lack most of the pigmentation. Thanks for the update.

Orchesella cincta, juvenile...
Dear Tom. I owe you an apology. Your first ID seems to be correct anyway. Compare your picture with that of Toby Barton of the UK:

Due to the white background in your picture, the typical white transversal band of O. cincta did not stand out very well. So, it was me, myself and I that got confused... Sorry for the trouble caused...

Thanks Frans, I didn't look as close as I should have.

Orchesella celsa, juvenile
Note the absent distinct white transversal band at the posterior margin of the 2nd abdominal segment, which is typical for O. cincta. Compare with your pictures of juvenile O. cincta of same size:

I agree it is confusing in this picture, though...
