i would guess male... bibionid? perhaps Bibio...

I'll second Bibio... we really need to get a Bibio expert to this site (if one even exists)... 54 North American species... none of our Bugguide pics are identified past Bibio

thanks for the confirmation... i am happy with genus, but having an expert would be nice... i do not know much about these, can you do that much with just a photo.
