Thanks for the species identification, and the nice explanation.

This is Quedius (Quedius) lat
This is Quedius (Quedius) laticollis, a species that is more common as you go south of Ontario. Can be found even in agricultural areas. In response to comments on the other photos of this series: this species is very close to the introduced molochinus but so far the species is known only from eastern Canada and additionally, the antennomeres are longer in laticollis.
