Perhaps an Argiope trifasciata


Might the other spider have been the female?

 
I thought it was an Argiope, but the only kind
I've seen here is A. aurantia, not "trifasciata."
Based on your tip and the other BG images, I believe it is trifasciata.
The web was definitely built by one of the Neosconas,though.
