Sort of
the toma part means "cut", here as in "cut into divisions". It's the same root as in medical terms like appendectomy ("cutting out of the appendix"). So really it's more like "cut equally"- the same idea, but expressed differently.

Beg to differ...
'toma' in 'isotoma' is derived from the latin word 'tomus', or the greek 'tomos', meaning 'part'. The 'toma' refers in fact to the result of 'cutting', not to the cutting itself : the part being cut. Think of the french 'Tome I' (= Volume I, of a series of books making one work). Think of 'entomology' = 'in-parts-knowledge', or free translated 'the knowledge of animals that are builtup in parts'. 'insects' = 'in-sections', this is more close to what you mean: a section is the result of a cutting.
Therefore, I would like to emend your 'cut equally' to 'cut in equal parts' or better 'parted equally'. In fact the body of Collembola is not cut at all but it is made up of equally sized parts ;-)

I knew you would clarify for me, Chuck.
:-)
