strange egg case? - Arilus cristatus

strange egg case? - Arilus cristatus
Hall Creek NRMA, Calvert County, Maryland, USA
March 30, 2007
Size: 20 mm
I found this hexagonal egg case (at least that's what I think it is) attached to a red cedar branch. I am really curious as to who put it there. The amber-like sides are firm but sticky and the tops of each cell resemble little flowers. After I photographed it, I removed the small branch to which it was attached and have it in a terrarium. Hopefully I'll get to see what emerges.

True bugs
These appear to be Assasin Bug (Reduviidae) eggs. See here for similar image.:)

*EDIT* Actually all the images in the guide appear to be posted under the genus Arilus (Wheel Bugs). Just to narrow it down.

Thanks, Stephen.....
If only I'd had a clue where to look, I'd have found the excellent photos under Arilus cristatus. Hopefully I'll get some photos of them hatching.

I hope so too...
I've yet to find any of the Assassin Bugs. On the top of my list, though, are the Ambush Bugs (Phymatidae). Also, excellent website!
