X. lugens? - Xylophagus cinctus

X. lugens? - Xylophagus cinctus
Ames, Story County, Iowa, USA
April 1, 2007
Size: 10 mm
I would like to nominate myself for Dumbest Entomologist Of The Year Award... I found this guy while sitting on my futon... what a Xylophagid would be doing in my apartment I cannot say... my best guess is that he was attracted to the honey I sprayed on the nearby window and found a way inside...

This is the first specimen of this family I have ever seen... so I put him in a tube and chilled him in the fridge... the photo shoot was going well... then he woke up and climbed my finger and stayed put for a good minute... alas, he flew away... somewhere in my living room is a very cool fly that refuses to fly to the light

the entomology gods giveth, and the entomology gods taketh away

OH JOY! I just found it this morning by my fluorescent light (which is weird, it wasn't on at any point last night... truly a whimsical creature
