Aphids - Melanaphis

Aphids - Melanaphis
Henderson, Chester County, Tennessee, USA
October 9, 2014
Recently a found some Johnson Grass and a Rumex sp. covered with many wasps, flies, and other assorted bugs. They were running all over the plants but none were actually feeding. On closer examination, I found these aphids in a fold of the Johnson Grass so I'm guessing that they are producing honeydew and that's what has all the other bugs so excited. There were also a few predatory insects enjoying the bug buffet.

An interesting observation was that there was never more than one individual of any species of wasp on the plants at any given time.

Moved
Moved from Aphids.

Either M. sacchari or M. sorghi, but the separation in the key uses the length of the hind tibia compared to the length of the processus terminalis.
