One of Richard's mandibular-horned minute fungus beetles - Octotemnus - male

One of Richard's mandibular-horned minute fungus beetles - Octotemnus - Male
Berkeley County, South Carolina, USA
March 17, 2007
Size: about 2.3 mm minus horns
A trick I discovered for getting a wide range of views of adult ciids is to give them a small scrap of the fungus they live in and they will tirelessly circumnavigate the tiny chunk. This trick is all the more useful because ciids have a difficult time standing on all six legs in my plastic deli containers (or any slick surface I presume) and spend most of the time struggling to right themselves. Fungus is something they're built to hang onto.
