Mottled Mantid - Stagmomantis californica - female

Mottled Mantid - Stagmomantis californica - Female
Kane Springs Rd, Meadow Valley Mountains, N of Moapa, Lincoln County, Nevada, USA
September 2, 2014
I'm not sure what kind of mantid this is, it has an unusal coloration. The top of it's mid abdomen seemed to be torn open - would that be from laying the eggs? Thank you.

Stagmomantis
This is an adult female of the genus Stagmomantis. She looks like a specimen of S. carolina. Those aren't known to be found that far west, but with today's mobile economy, anything is possible.

I don't believe the abdominal deformity is the result of egg laying.. It may be from an encounter with a predator or even some type of pathogen. If you look closely at the prothorax near the head you will see abberations as well.
