The whole structure she was sitting on. I was assuming this to be a cocoon, but am realizing it could be something else.

yes thats the coccon ..
but she laid eggs on it which she then covered with scales from her body to camo them..shes one of the tussocks and that's about as far as I can get it, not seeing the caterpillar.
