Short-winged Green Grasshopper - Dichromorpha viridis

Short-winged Green Grasshopper - Dichromorpha viridis
Cumberland County, North Carolina, USA
July 21, 2004
According to http://entnemdept.ifas.ufl.edu/ghopper/strid.pdf The forewings of this species are, as the common name suggests, usually short, but occasional long-winged individuals occur. In males, the forewings often are about three fourths the length of the abdomen, whereas in females the forewings often extend just half the length of the abdomen. The males measure 14-17 mm in length, the females 23to 27mm.

Long-winged form? Male?
Lynette, this does indeed appear to be a long-winged form. These wings are much longer than those of the other images in the guide.

This looks like a male to me, but I'm not completely sure. Compare the images of a pair I posted recently:

What do you think?

Yes,
I think it's correct. Grasshoppers can be pretty hard, though. (for me anyway)

Yes, tough
I was agreeing with your id. I think I can see those two lines across the pronotum--they are illustrated in Capinera's new book. (You might have D. elegans in your area, and it is supposed to have one transverse groove on the pronotum.) I was really commenting on the sex (male), and the long wings.

Incidentally, a useful addition to Capinera's new book on all orthoptera for the whole country is his older book on Grasshoppers (Acrididae) of Florida. Most of our species are in there, and the photos are excellent, a good adjunct to the plates in the newer work.

Insects are like photography--one always needs one more reference or one more accessory!
