Big-headed Ground Beetle - Scarites

Big-headed Ground Beetle - Scarites
Cumberland County, North Carolina, USA
December 8, 2003

Scarites
S. subterraneus and S. quadriceps both occur in Ontario and, as Patrick noted in the Guide, North Carolina -- and probably many places inbetween, as well as elsewhere. I may have seen both species but don't know how to distinguish quadriceps (1, 2) from the supposedly more common subterraneus (1, 2, 3, 4). Anyone know how to (or if it's possible to) distinguish these two in the field?

no
I confirmed this ID with my beetle contact who works a lot with ground beetles. He even gave me a probably subterraneus on this one. He says "Common ground beetle is probably Scarites prob. “subterraneus although this species complex has yet to be well defined recently"
