Black Petaltail - Tanypteryx hageni - male

Black Petaltail - Tanypteryx hageni - Male
Row River Road, Lane County, Oregon, USA
July 14, 2002
This fellow just landed on John's vest. We were in an open woodland, not far from a waterfall. We can't remember how you feel about animals in the hand but these were the only decent Tanypteryx we have. Feel free to frass them if you wish.

Questionable ID?
I'd be curious who ID'd this. It sure looks like a clubtail (Gomphidae) to me. As I recall, petaltails are not nearly as gaudy in color, either.

Sorry.
Ok, I stand corrected. I only started getting into dragonflies in Ohio, where Tanyopteryx is a dull grey thing. Don't think I ever saw these when I lived in Oregon.

There's links to some excellent scans from the U. of Puget Sound on this page, and a number of photos by various people on this page.

Thanks for the links. Looks like we did ID it correctly. And indeed it was a handsome animal -- beautiful yellows and chocolate browns -- a stunning creature! We're still a little disappointed in what we can get from our scanner on our 35mm slides, but assume we will get better at scanning. There are just too many options once the slide is scanned!!
