One of Richard's mandibular-horned minute fungus beetles - Octotemnus - male

One of Richard's mandibular-horned minute fungus beetles - Octotemnus - Male
Berkeley County, South Carolina, USA
March 17, 2007
Size: about 2.3 mm minus horns
Here the beetle shows the context in which it was spreading its wings, not to fly but to turn itself over.

Ciids have a terrible time retaining their footing on the bottom of the slick plastic deli container and hence spend more time trying to get off their back than they do upright. After struggling in vain for awhile many beetle species, ciids included, will spread their wings and use them to leverage themselves back onto their feet.

The other two spreadwing images were captured in the second after this beetle had uprighted itself.
