Size: about 10 mm
Found in deciduous woods under one of many boards used for monitoring salamander populations. This place is known for its hordes of vicious mosquitos in the summer; legend says that the resident skunks are the most ornery ones in Canada.

I know this one:-)
This is one of our largest rove beetles, Platydracus maculosus (formerly Staphylinus maculosus). When I see them flying I often mistake them for large wasps.
