Carabid - Harpalus affinis

Carabid - Harpalus affinis
Tippecanoe County, Indiana, USA
April 2, 2007
Size: 10 mm
This carabid beetle is giving me fits trying to ID it. Maybe I can get some help.

Coloration: Bright green pronotum with darker almost black head. Elytra are have a coppery color. Antennae unicolorous.

One setae above eyes and one pair along pronotal margin (at middle). No large setal puncture(s) on elytra, but intervals punctuate, especially laterally and apically. Elytra hairy, more so on sides.

Found in woodland area, probably in or under dead wood.

Moved
Moved from Harpalus.

Probably Harpalus affinis
You´ll just have to check out whether other domestic Harpalus spp. may have the outer interstriae with fine hairs.
If this specimen was from Europe, there would be no doubt about its identity.

cheers!

Other species in North Americ
Other species in North America are pubescent (I didn't see them all, so I don't know if the pubescence is has this one), but anyway, from Lindroth, the metallic surface will disting H. affinis from the other. So H. affinis is the good identification.

That´s it
Hi Pierre-Marc,

thanks for pointing this out! In Europe it´s the same thing: H.affinis is the single pubescent METALLIC species (not regarding Ophonus spp, which have pubecent and completely puncate pronotum also).

Thanks
Thanks guys. I'll have to look back at the key and work backwards to find my error(s).
