Boatman Fly Series - Pogonortalis doclea

Boatman Fly Series - Pogonortalis doclea
Fullerton Arboretum, Fullerton, Orange County, California, USA
April 9, 2007
After several posts, I know these are hard to shoot. This time, I lucked out. Perhaps this fly is teneral. At any rate, its wings were not properly (or completely?) formed, so it stayed put while I photographed it from various angles. With the possible exception of one photo by Chuck Entz, this series seems to offer the best representation of the fly's interesting eyes.

My, what big eyes you have, Mr. Fly...
And pretty ones too!
The left wing seemed to be expanding (or at least flattening out) as you progressed through the series. The other one still seemed quite crumpled towards the end. Interesting...

Thanks for the confirmation on the wings.
The photo session ended when the poor fly pitched forward, fell off the leaf, and no doubt planted his face in the ground. The area, near a small waterfall, is filled with teneral damselflies, so maybe I've discovered a toweling-off place.
