Sweet Jumper - Phidippus mystaceus - female

Sweet Jumper - Phidippus mystaceus - Female
Wimberley, Hays County, Texas, USA
January 2, 2015
Size: 15 mm
Looks like Phidippus mystaceus? Cute, big female. Around 15 mm or so. Was hibernating when my son found her tent and pried it apart before I figured out what he was doing.

Big female
Is this 15 to 17mm body length? When we measure body length of a jumper, we should not include pedipalps or spinnerets. I've been rearing some P. mystaceus from Oklahoma, and the females are 10 to 12mm in body length. From what I've seen in other Phidippus species such as P. audax, otiosus, putnami and cardinalis, individuals in southern states often grow to larger size than in the Northern latitude states.

Interesting, Don. I did not know that about spider size, but it makes sense. I wish I had kept this one, I could measure her more accurately. I don't remember how I measured her before. After she had her brood and they molted to 2i, I let them all go.

Gotta love it!
Amazing feat to post an arthropod in this lousy weather!

I find it a great idea to bring my camera with me wherever I go, even in weather like this (does that make me odd or obsessed? both? haha)! We were taking the trash out and decided to walk around on the property for a few minutes since we've pretty much been stuck in house for days! And what do you know! We find this little beauty.
