Thanks. I wonder how her offspring fared, hatching out in soggy peat instead of water.

Aeshna canadensis
With the zig-zag anterior lateral stripe and yellow spot behind it this has to be Aeshna canadensis. Apparently this individual had not read the oviposition instructions in the field guide(1). I checked Needham, Westfall, and May(2) and there are no additional species from Maine that could be confused with canadensis.
