under holly leaf

under holly leaf
Donalds, Abbeville County, South Carolina, USA
January 5, 2015
Size: ~1.25mm dia
Found on underside of a holly leaf. I see a lot of whitefly pupae under these leaves but this was bigger, more round and convex than they appear. Also, this has what looks like small orange pupae lying around it. Could this be some sort of scale insect?

I think the orange objects could be whitefly eggs, but I believe the larger object is a propagule from a "cannonball fungus" or something like that. And actually that suggests that the eggs may belong to something fungivorous... I think some cecidomyiids have orange eggs, for instance.

thanks
Thanks, Charley. I'd never seen cecidomyiid larvae and googling, they do look much like these. I've been watching this one particular tree for years as it seems to have a lot of life under its leaves but had never seen either of these things. Fantastic proposals on both counts. I'll check back on them when I get a chance.
