Harpalus caliginosus (Fabricius, 1775) - Harpalus caliginosus - male

Harpalus caliginosus (Fabricius, 1775) - Harpalus caliginosus - Male
Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska, USA
May 27, 2014

Moved; corrected
Corrected info: Harpalus caliginosus (Fabricius 1775).
head micropunctate; gonocoxae darker, relatively thicker, apex rounded.
Other specimens collected in same area were identified to be same, the sp. caliginosus based on their aedeagus, and last exposed tergite (in case of females).

Moved from Harpalus katiae.

Harpalus katiae --
Thank you for re-examining specimen to confirm species placement.

PWM note: I had overlooked the paper by Will 1997 when I made my earlier independent observation (posted on BugGuide) of the diagnostic shape of the female pygidium. Nice to know that great minds think alike! Info pages of katiae and caliginosus are updated accordingly.

I apologize for the confusion
I apologize for the confusion. This specimen actually is sp. caliginosus. I only referred to the text description on the head (and not figures provided or other description). All the punctures I saw were larger than this so I was quite confused with this 'micropuncture.' I observed aedeagus and abdomen, and figured out it is Harpalus caliginosus (Fabricius 1775). I can try to take a picture of each part closely so anyone can observe little more on this specimen. (will do so soon)

Double checking --
did you rule out sibling species "H. katiae"?

i wondered that, too
also, the date is missing

Date edited.
I looked up the collections of two species housed in UNSM. I could not differentiate between them. could you link me some images how exactly are they different from each other?
I will make sure to move this post to the correct category in the near future as a photographed specimen isn't with me to check that.

For H. caliginosus vs katiae please hit the Info button
at top of this page. The differences are apprectited only under microscopy. Not sure if a BugGuide image somewhere highlights the presence or absence of the diagnostic head micropunctures.
