Planthopper - Acanalonia servillei

Planthopper - Acanalonia servillei
Fort Bragg, Cumberland County, North Carolina, USA
September 22, 2004
This one spread its wings when it saw me...I'm not sure if it was trying to look bigger or more like a leaf. It didn't work, though...the action of spreading its wings is what caused me to see it.

Acanalonia
Acanalonia (Issidae) have wings that are evenly net-veined, whereas Flatids have a prominent crossvein row along the costal (lower) margin of the forewings.

Three of these look much alike, but differ in size. This one is probably Acanalonia servillei, 9-15 mm (half an inch) long, whereas A. immaculata is only 6-7 mm.

Acanaloniidae
Pretty sure this is an Acanaloniidae plant hopper, as they have the rounded forewing. Flatidae would be the only other option, but they are generally more wedge-shaped.
