Sweetbay Silk Moth - Callosamia securifera - male

Sweetbay Silk Moth - Callosamia securifera - Male
Recreational Center, Screven County, Georgia, USA
April 13, 2007
This moth was on the walking path (concrete) and was very lethargic. It moved very little while we observed it and only opened it's wings when touched with a small twig.

This appears to be a male sat
This appears to be a male saturniid, but it lacks the wing marking that would identify the ones I am familiar with.

Tulip-Tree Silk Moth, maybe
It looks very much like the photos of a Tulip-Tree Silk Moth (Callosamia angulifera, which is a saturniid) on Larry Line's web site. Here is the
link.

That's my thought too, though
That's my thought too, though something about it looks mighty close to a male securifera

Correct
You're right on the money Dennis. This is indeed a male Callosamia securifera. These don't commonly occur where I am in Georgia (N & W of Atl), but they are much more common in GA south of the piedmont throughout the coastal plain. Once in a while I'll see one while traveling, for instance near Savanah, and even at a rest area on I75 just near the GA/FL border.
This is an excellent addition to the guide.

Thanks so much
Thanks so much to you for identifying our moth. He was such a beauty and we had never seen one like it.
