Brown Spider of unknown type - Achaearanea tepidariorum

Brown Spider of unknown type - Achaearanea tepidariorum
Athens, Clarke County, Georgia, USA
April 8, 2007
Size: nickle sized
This is a spider I found in my bathroom closet. It's an unlit closet. The spider was hanging upside down from a shelf but was not on a web, just a single strand of silk. We live in a heavily wooded area full of pine, and sweet gum trees, thick with varigated ivy.

An
adult male common house spider.

Male cobweb weaver.
This is a nice shot of a male cobweb weaver, family Theridiidae. I can tell it is an adult male because of the modified pedipalps (they look like tiny boxing gloves in this image) which he uses in mating. Male spiders wander in search of mates, and do not spin webs when they are doing this. I cannot identify the spider further, as details needed for that are not visible in this image. It would not appear to be a black widow male, but males are not known to envenomate humans anyway.

Thank you. I'll just leave
Thank you.

I'll just leave him in the bathroom where he is then rather than putting him outdoors. Seems he'd rather be in the house anyway!
