mating Robust Toad Lubbers - Phrynotettix robustus - Male Female
Big Bend National Park, Brewster County, Texas, USA
April 4, 2007
Size: female 2 inches
This very strange pair of grasshoppers was in the Chihuahuan Desert of the Big Bend, near a desert oasis. The female resembled a fat pebble and was so bloated she could barely hop (the weight of the male didn't help). I have seen many desert grasshoppers but never this fat.

Very Cool!
These are toad lubbers. I have not committed the genus name to memory because I have never personally encountered any specimens. I do believe we have at least one existing image in the guide pages. Nice find, terrific images!
