Velvet Ant - female - Timulla

Velvet Ant - female - Timulla
Kellogg, Wabasha County, Minnesota, USA
July 27, 2001
Also from the Cedar Creek site - just Dasymutilla - no species found. Anyone have any ideas?

Timulla sp.
Pretty certain this is a species of Timulla, not Dasymutilla. I'll see if I can get Dr. Craig Brabant (University of Wisconsin) to take a look at our velvet ant images. Nice shot!

Definitely a Timulla sp.
You are right that the specimen is Timulla. Based on the loaclity and general appearance I would guess T. vagans (Fabricius), but it is difficult enough to identify these guys under a microscope, and almost impossible in the field! Great shot!
