Hi
Machele. I photographed this species earlier in the week.
Gordon pointed me in the right direction, and there are some good images here.

Moved from Ants.

Carpenter Ants (Camponotus sp.) - young foudress
This newly dealated female was digging a burrow in order to shelter herself for the night. If the soil is suitable and if she remains unnoticed - especially by other ants, her worst enemies - she will remain there until first workers emerge. That's why you didn't see her coming out anymore after some while: she was fitting her future nest chamber out.

Thank you.
For the ID and the information, it is very interesting.
