Sperchontidae
Hi Bill:

It is indeed a member of the Sperchontidae (Lebertioidea), and the bumpiness of the glandularial protuberances suggests Sperchonopsis, but there are some pretty warty Sperchon, too. A side view of slide-mounted palps is needed to be sure (see p. 8 of my flow-chart key to water mites of Alberta: http://www.biology.ualberta.ca/faculty/heather_proctor/uploads/pdfs/AquaticMitesKnown_Alberta%20Aug_2006.pdf).

Hmm, I think this might be a new family for Bugguide! Also, it could be a new superfamily if one follows an alternative classification of water mites, which includes Sperchontoidea. If Bugguide is following the classification in Krantz & Walter (2009), though, it is in Lebertioidea.

Cheers,
Heather
