Meloidae - Tricrania sanguinipennis
I believe this is Meloidae - Tricrania sanguinipennis, and a better image than the only other one in BugGuide. see

If memory serves, these develope underground in bee's nests, often in sandy areas.

Wow, yes. I found these beetles in a spot where there are also definitely underground bee's nests. and I heard them before finding them. When I approached the area last year, I heard the tiny rustling of leaves all around me but at first didn't see anything. Looking down there were at least *hundreds* of these beetles moving about.

I'd looked through every beetle picture, I think, on bugguide and had trouble finding a match :-) so thanks for the quick reply and great info.
