Synonyms and other taxonomic changes
Placed in Tabanus in most of the literature, but moved to Hamatabanus by John Burger in his 1995 catalog - see Identification below
Identification
Dr. John Burger commented on this species (20 April 2007):
Moved from Tabanus with some hesitation based on
1 - dorsal tooth of basal flagellomere (of antenna) is pronounced and has a slightly forward projection, although quite short.
2 - apical flagellomeres are exceptionally stout
3 - eyes are hairy; however in some specimens pilosity may be restricted to very sparse scattered hairs along the outer edges of the eyes. Possibility that the hairs are easily lost
4 - individuals in the genus tend to fly early in the season. Species superficially similar to H. exilipalpis (the Tabanus longus group) and active late in the season.
5 - very faint transverse stripe across eye, starting from the base of the frons.
