At the edge of deciduous woods. Is this Xanthogramma? (X. flavipes is the only species in the genus in North America).

Xanthogramma sp?

Hello Robin,
I think you are quite right by thinking this is a species from the genus Xanthogramma.
The problem is that I have seen (collection)specimens of X. flavipes, and they do not have this colours on the abdomen.
So, your specimen is not a Xanthogramma, OR it is but not flavipes, OR this is a genus close to Xanthogramma.
The last option is that X. flavipes is very variable in coloration, but that I don't know.

Thanks, Gerard. Apparently, some females of X. flavipes have brown bands between the yellow abdominal bands, as shown in the photo at the bottom of this page. Image moved to species page from Syrphidae section.
