Coyote Ridge near south San Jose, Santa Clara County, California, USA March 1, 2015
I saw two large golden flies cavorting on a cow pattie adjacent to a serpentine spring on Coyote Ridge. I initially thought they were robber flies based on the size and posture, but looking at Kaufman's Insect Guide and Powell and Hogue's California Insects later, plus based on habitat, I decided Scathophaga stercoraria was the likely species.
