Black And Yellow Argiope - Argiope aurantia - female

Black And Yellow Argiope - Argiope aurantia - Female
Norris City, White County, Illinois, USA
September 9, 2006
This was a large garden spider. A Black and Yellow Argiope, I believe? Can anybody confirm this for me, please?

Very nice image
We love the way it is just hanging there in space when we look at the enlargement!

Conditions
Actually, the photograph is rotated 90 degrees counter-clockwise. The spider had built a web on the outside wall of my house. I simply positioned myself with the camera against the wall and the background behind the spider was the solid white of the door framing. It was relatively easy to remove the area immediately above and below the spider, the area outside of his immediate plane, and the web that it was barely sitting on. I thought this would really bring the focus on what the spider looked like, with all the hairs on his legs.

Interesting, these spiders
usually hang in the web head down, so we would have thought you rotated the image 90 degrees closkwise!

I Apologise
After what you said about them hanging head down, I went back and re-scrutinized the picture a little better. But, he was in fact hanging with his head straight down. Being colorblind like I am, I confused the pattern of the wall and thought he was looking up. Experts know their spiders, so I'm glad you told me about this little quirk of theirs. Thanks!
