It was about the size of a carpenter ant. (not a great image, frassing is fine after ID).

We have some reasonably similar images
in the guide under Cyrtophorus here, but Yanega Plate 17 lists some even smaller beetles in Microclytus. Unfortunately we can't find any online images for that genus to compare with. So don't frass this till some of the beetle experts get a chance to look at it. It may help us separate out images from those different genera.

 
vote for Cyrtophorus verrucosus
my vote would be for grey example of Cyrtophorus verrucosus, similar to . I think I see the medial arched pronotum, which would rule out Microclytus. Funny you compare the size to a carpenter ant, as that is what many of these longhorn seem to mimic in more than just size.
