Spider - Zygiella x-notata

Spider - Zygiella x-notata
Los Gatos, Santa Clara County, California, USA
February 3, 2007
Size: Unsure. 7mm w/o legs?
Found on an outside deck. The object visible above the spider is the railing.

Moved
Moved from Zygiella. Based on known range this spider should either be P. dispar or Z. x-notata. I've ruled out P. dispar since Rod Crawford has told us that it is found in natural forest.

Zygiella x-notata?
I believe this is an orb weaver in the genus Zygiella. Easy enough to tell. If the web was missing a triangular sector, then that is what this spider is. They frequently build webs near water.

Check on the size given
something is wrong.

Ignore the size
I'm unsure about the size- it was a straight guess since I took the picture a few months ago and there isn't a proper sense of scale from the picture. I tried to give an approximate size, since it's perhaps slightly more helpful than "small".

Sorry, our point was that 70mm
is close to three inches without the legs! That would be some spider! She is a beauty though. We hope someone recognizes what it is!

Oh. Oops. You're quite right.
Oh. Oops. You're quite right. Perhaps I shouldn't have put it up at 4:30 in the morning. I meant 7mm, of course. Thanks for the correction :)
