Goldenrod Bunch Gall - Rhopalomyia solidaginis

Goldenrod Bunch Gall - Rhopalomyia solidaginis
Durham County, North Carolina, USA
December 11, 2004
This was a much less common gall than presumed Eurosta solidaginsis in the same power line right-of-way. Width of the gall was perhaps 4 cm.

This is a presumptive identification of this gall, based on its morphology in comparsion to a photograph at North Carolina State University, and illustrations in Eastman. (1) The insect is called "Goldenrod Gall Gnat".
