Male Stilt-legged Fly - Compsobata - male

Male Stilt-legged Fly - Compsobata - Male
Mountain Meadows Reservoir area next to Westwood, elevation 5050ft, Lassen County, California, USA
May 26, 2014
Size: Body length 6mm
Specimen 1 of 3

See specimen 2, another male ; and specimen 3, a female .

These three stilt-legged flies were caught within the marshy meadow area adjacent to the shoreline of the lake - a characteristic habitat for many stilt-legged flies.

These specimens appear to be possibly the same as this other BugGuide submission:
Compsobata mima
However, as noted "Black Compsobata like this may not be reliably identifiable from photos alone."

On the Info page for Family Micropezidae, is a link to "The Micropezidae of California (Diptera)" - see here: (1). This document includes Keys, descriptions, geographic range, and figures. On page six it says the Compsobata subgenus Trilophyrobata consists of four 'black' colored species found in western United States. Of these four, only Compsobata mima is mentioned as occurring in California. Also, the C. mima discussion on page seven seems to support this species for these three specimens.

A confirmation, or otherwise, is appreciated - thanks!
