Alypia octomaculata (Eight-spotted forester), maybe? - Alypia octomaculata
Baton Rouge - BREC Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, USA
April 24, 2007
Taken about 12:00 noon.
80 deg F
On handrail of boardwalk over Cypress / Tupelo Gum Swamp.
Virginia creeper and muscadine (a wild grape) in the area.

I agree -
nice shot. So much detail, but you don't mention the length - it would be nice to have that, too. : )

Hannah, what about that
wittfeldii confusion we had before. Do we know which one is in Louisiana?

Hmm... If I read Wagner correctly,
Louisiana is part of the range for octomaculata (Maine to Northern FL and TX). The white splotch on this seems to match the one on his image, too - I don't think it extends to A7, which would make it A. wittfeldii.

FYI, John, our previous discussion was on this one (which we assigned to A. wittfeldii):

Great, thanks Hannah
we'll move it to octomaculata

In retrospect, I guess about 2 inches long
I remember thinking that it was quite small
I will have to get better about logging in the size.
I looked thru other shots but found nothing to reference the length.

Low light (1/15 sec shutter speed) and I rested the end of the lens on the handrail about 3 inches away.
If I had taken a shot from the top, there are details in the handrail that would have given a perspective of size.
