What is this red and black bug?
Clermont (Orlando), Florida, USA
April 28, 2007
We are new to Florida and are learning about all the new critters around our home. These little bugs are always on the driveway and also near the palm trees as well. We are not sure of what they may be.

Box Elder Bug nymph
is what it looks like to me.

It could be one of the other scentless plant bugs
- Jadera, the red-shouldered bug, is very common in my part of FL, whereas BugGuide doesn't have any Boisea images from down here, at least as yet. You should look for adults (wings that cover the abdomen) for a definite ID either way.

Jadera possible
It is possible that this could be a nymph of Jadera haematoloma, the Red-shouldered bug, common in Florida. What plant host it was found on or near might help. Boisea trivittata (Eastern Boxelder bug) is typically found on seed-bearing boxelder trees, while J. haematoloma prefers Chinaberry and Golden Rain tree. Although both species are sometimes found on ash, maple, and some fruit trees. It is my understanding that without additional info the nymphs of these two cannot be distinguished by photo, so I'll just move to family page for now.
