Hopping Bug - Orchesella villosa

Hopping Bug - Orchesella villosa
Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, USA
April 29, 2007
Size: 2-3mm
Tiny. Found under a rock. There were several of the lttle critters and they hop around like crazy. Not even sure if it's an insect. I'm wondering if it's an Amphipod. I'll try to get some side shots next week if I can relocate some.

Orchesella villosa
Family = Entomobryidae
Indeed these Orchesella's are active jumpers when disturbed.
You are a keen observer: Collembola at first sight might be confused easily with Amphipoda.
Note that Collembola are more related to Amphipoda than to Insecta. Recent phylogenetic studies show that Collembola possibly are a kind of terrestrial Crustacea. At least Collembola and Insecta have a different crustacean ancestor.

Thanks
When I was typing that I wasn't even sure it was an insect, I'd already had the answer without realing it. Thanks

Moved to Arthropleona guide page where it will be seen by someone who can ID it further.
