Large wasp like bug - Cimbex americana

Large wasp like bug - Cimbex americana
Victoria, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada
April 29, 2007
Size: 1 3/4" -2"
I found this yesterday sucking juice out of young hosta sprouts.
The banding on the body is actually more yellow than the pic.
I haven't seen one like this in the garden before....Any thoughts?
Thanks.....Richard

Moved
Moved from Cimbex.

Cimbex americana Leach
Females commonly have the yellow banded abdomen.

This looks like a Sawfly of some kind. Check out Symphyta, perhaps Cimbicidae.

Thanks for the quick response
Thanks for the quick response. I'll check out your suggestions.

I agree.
I agree with Sean. This is something in the genus Cimbex, maybe C. americana, or C. pacifica?

Thanks Guys
I believe you are right too. I appreciate the responses.
I was glad that it was really laid back, becuase it looked as if it could take a big chunk out of your arm. When I moved it onto a stick it went willingly without any incident.
Thanks again....Richard
