Nope, it is not a Merodon, looks more like a Mallota to me... Mallota is bigger than Merodon - just looks different...

I was wrong when I thought I was right, and right when I feared I was wrong. Ahhhh!

Looks like Narcissus bulb fly (Merodon equestris) to me
but I've seen exactly one of these in the wild.

...appropriate as there are at least two feral species of narcissus growing wild in my woods.

 
Made a liar out of myself
Actually, I see that I've shot two, both in Maryland. One at Chevy Chase near my daughter's home in DC and the other at Glen Echo Park in Silver Springs. Neat creatures!
