Could it be P. helena?
P. helena has been recorded in the two Maryland Counties west of Washington County, where I photo'd this beast. Bugguide itself lists it in Montgomery County, MD, just to the east and down stream from Washington County. The pattern of black on the wing is a good match for P. helena. I don't believe the pattern of black works for rufa, nuptialis, americana, confusa. While superficially similar, each species seem to have a distinctive pattern of black on the otherwise clear wings.
