KS Carpenter #1 - Xylocopa virginica

KS Carpenter #1 - Xylocopa virginica
Sedgwick Co. Park, Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas, USA
April 28, 2007
On a small patch of wildflowers, I saw several bees like this, plus assorted butter*flies and a bee*tle. The area was windy, and the insects were moving fast. Unfortunately, I wasn't!

Looks Like It To Me
I've read somewhere that the darker wings are a giveaway for the Eastern Carpenter Bee. I see them every day here at my house, in the warm weather, and I think your bee looks a lot like them. I'm no expert, but I think we have a winner!

yes
this is X. virginica

Thanks for the confirmation, John
I'm off to DC and hope to get some neat shots there.

Thanks much, Kenny
I'd posted two from Kansas, got two comments on another, and zilch on this one. Last night, I trotted out a pair from California, but nothing so far.

I'll wait a bit more, but believe you're right. At least, I can remove "bom*bus" from the title.
