Ptinus sexpunctatus
I Agree with Boris. This is Ptinus sexpunctatus Panzer. Interesting to know that it is found in Montana. We have just published a paper in Entomological News which newly reports this species from Nova Scotia, Utah, and Pennsylvania. The paper is:

Majka, C.G., Philips, T.K., and Sheffield, C.S. 2007. Ptinus sexpunctatus Panzer (Coleoptera: Anobiidae: Ptininae) newly recorded in North America. Entomological News, 118(1): 73–76.

There is a PDF reprint available at:

http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/Environment/NHR/PDF/Ptinus_sexpunctatus.pdf

It is not on the Canadian list at canacoll.org since this dates from 1991 and the discovery is a recent one.

Best wishes!

Christopher Majka

same individual . . .
as this one?:

Please read comments with a similar one in the guide:

In the case of your Ptinus, I am almost sure it has to be the recently introduced Ptinus sexpunctatus, see a picture from Europe, and this article:

Thanks to you all....
I can't be sure it's the same individual. It probably is not. I found this one the next day about 100 yards from where I found the first one. Both were found on the side of buildings.

possibles
great looking beetle - presumably on the Canadian list for either Alberta or Saskatchewan - not that many choices. Boris may recognize this as many are evidently adventive spp. from Europe [P. bicinctus?].
