Large Caddisfly (5-segmented palpi) - Ptilostomis - female

Large Caddisfly (5-segmented palpi) - Ptilostomis - Female
Snowhill Road north of Cabin Branch Creek, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
May 3, 2007
Size: 24 mm
I made a specimen of this individual and flipped it over to get a view of the mouthparts, which project outward after death--in life they were kept in line with, and below, the antennae. Shows the following characteristic(s) of the family Phryganeidae (1): This one has five segments, I believe, and that makes it a female--there is a very short fifth segment there at the base. See guide page for details. Corrections welcome--I have no experience with caddisflies!
