Moth: Pero sp. - Pero morrisonaria

Moth: Pero sp. - Pero morrisonaria
Block Island, Washington County, Rhode Island, USA
May 22, 2015
Clearly a Pero sp. moth. I am strongly inclined towards Pero morrisonia because of the deeply serated hindwing outer margin, but it might possibly be P. ancetaria. Help would be much appreciated.

I would agree that based on appearances, this would most likely be morrisonia.

However, I have to add the small caveat that in just the last 1-2 years, identifying Pero specimens to species from photos has become quite murky, and without a physical examination or DNA, many, many IDs almost need an obligatory asterisk.

That said, based on the appearance here and general criteria for visual distinction, it fits with morrisonia, so that's why I went ahead and moved it. If anyone feels it would be better left at genus level, feel free to move it back - no hard feelings if that's the case. :-)

Nigel, as you know I do not pretend to be an expert, but I did notice the black spot on the forewing in the PM area. This is a quote from the INFO page of P. honestaria, "No black spot centered near the distal edge of the FW." That said, I see one on some of the examples on MPG - most notably the Carol Wolf photo there.

I am inclined to think you might be right. Most of the P. morrisonia examples have it. A hind-wing might help.

I have the same problem
Last night I tried to ID this pero from last year but I was stumped too.

Pero sp.
The Peros seem really hard - I have about 6-8 others taken over the past 2 weeks! I'm doing better with Zales! and

I have my work cut out for me...
